Oriel Villas, Cheltenham

The Project: Conversion of a pair of Grade II Listed Regency townhouses from redundant office accommodation into 10 luxury apartments

The Brief: Located on a prominent corner in Cheltenham the client has purchased a pair of listed Regency villas that have most recently been used as offices but which are now vacant and in need of refurbishment. As part of the refurbishment the remaining original features will be retained and reinstated and the villas will be converted back to residential use as a number of high quality apartments.

The Soluition: The buildings have been subject to a number of earlier planning applications with various elements carried out in a historically insensitive manner and not all carried out in accordance with the necessary approvals. As such the refurbishment provides an opportunity to make good much of the damage that has been caused to the building by its conversion to office use. There have been extensive pre-application discussions with the local authorities’ conservation department to ensure resulting scheme is acceptable to them. In addition to the former office accommodation the roof space will also be used to provide residential accommodation and will be accessed via the reinstatement of a previously blocked up historic staircase.
