Gloucester Docks

The Project: Double Reynolds Warehouse

The Client:  Crest Nicholson South West

The Brief: Crest Nicholson (SW) were refurbishing all the grade II listed warehouses in Gloucester docks. The Double Reynolds warehouse was a double banked warehouse and as such was far deeper in plan than the previous warehouses that we had also refurbished.

The Solution: Due to the depth of the plan it was necessary to find a way to bring natural light deep into the floor plan. The apartments were located around the perimeter of the building with the circulation located in the centre of the building.

A central atrium was created by removing the floor boards to a central 9x9m square. A series of bridges were inserted to cross the atrium and provide individual access to each of the apartments.  At roof level a link was made across the valley of the two roofs this was highly glazed, to ensure the maximum amount of natural light filtered down through the atrium the walk ways had timber boarding floors and glass hand rails.

The project was completed Autumn 2004 and won a Civic Trust Award in 2005 for ‘The Best Refurbishment Project’
