Back to space for living: urban

Well Place, Cheltenham

Brief: The proposed development comprises demolition of the existing bungalow and garage and the construction of 2 new contemporary dwellings. The proposed design provides high quality spaces within a well-designed contemporary envelope set within landscaped gardens which provides for a high quality development appropriate to the site context

Solution: The proposed scheme is designed as a pair of dwellings handed around the central point of the site. The main body of the buildings are then set as 2 storey blocks with a projecting tripartite rendered bay set against a solid recessed brickwork plinth. This provides an interesting stepping of the massing which is again emphasised by the top floor which is set back on all sides reducing the impact on the adjacent neighbours, Well Place and the rear gardens. The animated form of the buildings provides dynamic forms when viewed from both Douro and Christ Church Roads. The views from the street are partially screened by the trees on the surrounding sites and also the high boundary walls which will be replaced in new brickworks to match the new mews wall of the adjacent house wall.
