Specialist Care
Introducing our care projects
Our first project in the specialist care sector was for National Star College — the £5m+ award-winning Bradbury Gardens development in the centre of Cheltenham.
Since then, we’ve had the privilege of designing a wide range of projects for the specialist care sector, including residential accommodation for specialist colleges, day centres supporting educational needs, therapy facilities such as a hydrotherapy centre, and private residential schemes that enable independent living within the community.
We’re passionate about creating spaces shaped around the independence, dignity and wellbeing of residents. Every project is developed in close collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure the final design meets the needs of the whole community.
Take a look at some of our projects below
“The project team understands the needs of the young people we support and truly grasp the ethos and vision of the charity. That makes all the difference to a project like this. Not only will young people be able to live there comfortably and safely but the space will enable them to develop and thrive”
Davis Ellis - Former National Star Chief Executive
Helping you with our holistic approach
As designers of specialist care environments, we understand how a building can influence the wellbeing and comfort of its residents. Our role is to ensure that the spaces we design don’t just function effectively but truly support the individuals who use them.
We combine a deep understanding of the practical requirements that improve wellbeing, accessibility and independence with insight gained from our work across private residential, education and commercial sectors. This broader perspective enables us to bring fresh thinking and innovative design solutions to every project.
At the heart of our process is a holistic approach to design. We take time to understand the financial pressures, operational challenges and long-term goals of each care provider by undertaking masterplanning and building audits to analysing budgets and future adaptability. Equally important is the collaboration we establish early on with all stakeholders. By engaging with care providers, therapists, residents, students and families from the outset, we gain a full understanding of the needs and aspirations of everyone involved.
This rounded approach helps us strike the right balance so we can design spaces that are efficient and sustainable to operate, and meet the emotional, social and practical needs of residents and staff alike. It is this balance that ensures our projects deliver environments where people can thrive, now and in the future.
Sharing our insights
At the heart of inclusive design is the recognition that while everyone’s needs are unique, the desire for independence is universal. Director, John Everitt, shares how this philosophy underpins every care project we deliver at coombes:everitt
When it comes to your schools’ estate, we appreciate that your time is a constraint and your focus is on the immediate needs of supporting pupils and teachers, ensuring a safe environment and keeping budgets out of deficit. However, spending time on the creation of a strategic Estate Development Plan is fundamentally one of the best investments you can make.
As architects, we have the power to design learning environments that do more than simply minimise environmental harm—they can actively contribute to the regeneration, economic viability, and well-being of the school campus.
