A new chapter in the centuries-old history of Sunset Cottage on the outskirts of Cheltenham can now begin after coombes everitt architects secured planning permission for an extension to the two-storey home

Located at the foot of Cleeve Hill and overlooking Cheltenham Racecourse, the property is set within the Cotswold AONB and is a non-designated heritage asset.

The extension will almost double the home’s living space, while removing some of the features added during the 70s and 80s that are not in keeping with the building’s history. Cotswold stone roof tiles will replace the current concrete, while timber framed windows will replace the UPCC installations.

The extension will also enable occupants to make the most of the far-reaching views – across to the Malverns, the Welsh Hills and the Cotswold escarpment.

Overall, the design is aimed to ensure a project that’s in keeping with the building’s original features and sympathetic to the local environment, while seeking low or no-carbon solutions, and using traditional materials. The existing frontage will be retained.

The work will also help to improve the existing house and enable issues of damp to be addressed.

Work on Sunset Cottage is expected to begin in Spring.
